Chapter 7: Page 17
Well I said there would be some changes and so here are a couple of exciting announcements for Halflight: I applied to and was accepted by the Spider Forest comic book collective! (Ha ha Spider Forest… It took me an embarrassingly long time to get the elf joke hidden in there.) This is exciting for a couple of reasons, one because its a pretty cool collective full of lots of cool comics. Two, it’s going to get my butt to finally update the website here, so once I figure out how to wrangle comic press, things will look a little different. Three, hopefully we will be welcoming in some new readers! (Welcome, if that’s you.)
Another new announcement is this: my sister has been giving me great feedback on all of my creative projects, as she is a very talented and creative person with an eye for wordcraft. I asked her to officially help me with editing for optimum wordflow, so if you notice improvement there from here on out that would be down to her influence. Remember how I said she was really creative? She’s a fantastic costumer, check out her work at Iroha Cosplay.
In other news, I only have six weeks left of grad school, which is awesome, because it’s been a huge barrier to me giving the comic as much time as I wish I could. So lots of new stuff coming.
I’m new. One of the other comics I read, Sunset Grill (can’t recommend it enough!), mentioned Halflight coming into Spider Forest, so I read it through. You have engaging characters, a fascinating premise, and a lyrical art — I particularly like the Greenwood, it’s lovely, yet also when you’re going for “creepy” (Lenya’s home), you nail it.
One tip, though: when you are drawing a crescent moon, remember that the “bow” is always “aimed” at the sun — a crescent moon pointing/aiming up into the sky would be aiming into full daylight — and so would not, in fact, be visible itself at all.
Welcome! I’m glad you enjoyed the comic so far, and thank you for that tip, it’s a detail I hadn’t been thinking about (but what a cool way to establish those subtle realistic touches, I’ll definitely have to draw with that in the mind for future moonlit scenes!). I’m always working to improve so I really appreciate your feedback. Thanks for stopping by!
Go girl, go!!! go news and good luck with moving into real life after school. Keep growing and we be here for years…
Thanks! It’s been an exciting journey so far and I’m ready to be able to really kick things into gear again.
I just finished reading the whole thing and I enjoy it immensely. It is precisely the sort of high fantasy work that Is high quality and shows a good author who knows how to write a story. If you write enough, your name may even be remembered with the other greats like Ursula k le guin (earthsea, you would like it)!
I’m glad you liked it! I have enjoyed Earthsea, and I enjoy stories that take time to tell – which of course at a page a week anything takes time, but Halflight is just about done with setup now. There’s a lot more to come, and I’m really excited to be getting there. Thanks for stopping by and seeing where things have gone so far.
Wonder when that snobby guard last stepped outside of those safe walls
I bet it’s been a while!
